The Golf GTI is the go-to answer for the eternal question of ‘best all-round car to do everything’, but it’s quite pricey these days. So what if you could have a car that embodied all the same attributes as the Golf but in a smaller, cheaper package? Step up, Polo GTI…

It may technically be smaller, but the Polo GTI is actually around the same size as the Mk5 Golf, so still a decently sized family car – and it’s only about 35bhp down on the Golf too, so performance isn’t an issue.

The 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo engine produces 204bhp, meaning the Polo GTI hits 62mph in 6.5 seconds on the way to a 149mph top speed (that’s only 0.1 seconds and 6mph less than the big brother, for reference). Drive is to the front wheels via the excellent 7spd DSG gearbox.

Visually, all the GTI hallmarks are there – subtle yet sporty styling, red pinstripe running across the front, twin exhaust pipes at the rear, along with a subtle roof spoiler, 17-inch alloys and LED headlights.

Inside is the real treat, though, with loads of satin red trim, red stitching, a clear, stylish dash layout and the eponymous tartan seat fabric giving the Polo GTI the air of a much more expensive car inside.

Could this be all the car you really need? We think so, and you could win one right here with BOTB in the 48hr Lifestyle Competition!
