MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS
When Mini launched the new Cooper in 2001, it set a new benchmark for the segment. It was fast, had excellent handling, fun and had great styling, which meant that sales went through the roof and continued right through the second-generation model, which was sold worldwide to great success.
But times change, and now we’re on the third generation of Mini hatchback. Before, the Cooper S used to be the top dog, and then they added the John Cooper Works pack. Now the JCW is its own model sitting at the top of the regular production model tree (there’s a limited GP at the top usually), and what a car it is!
Still relatively diminutive by modern hatchback standards, the JCW packs a 228bhp punch thanks to the four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, which means 0-62mph is dealt with in 6.3 seconds on the way to a 153mph top speed – not bad for a little hot hatch! But the impressive thing is how this JCW tackles a set of twisty bends – it’s such fun you’ll be turning around to drive them again!
Now the JCW is in line with the newly facelifted Mini hatchback range, with an aggressive new front end, dark tinted lights front and rear and a whole host of new tech inside, including a new digital display for the driver.

MERCEDES-AMG GT 63
The first generation Mercedes-AMG GT was a huge hit, with proper old-school proportions of a massively long bonnet hiding a powerful V8 engine, RWD and two seats sitting almost on the rear axle. But times change…
This new AMG GT may look the same at a casual glance, but on closer inspection you notice the slightly shorter bonnet and longer cabin – the GT has grown up and is taking the fight directly to the 911 Turbo. So now it’s AWD and there are two occasional seats in the back as well as a huge boot.
No need to worry that the downsizing that hit the C63 has hit here too though – under that bonnet still resides a monstrous 4.0 litre twin turbo V8, now producing 577bhp and 800Nm of torque. That means 0-62mph is dealt with in 3.2 seconds and it almost hits 200mph!
The interior is taken from the new Mercedes-AMG SL too, so there’s an incredibly stylish dashboard with a massive central infotainment screen, with all the luxury you’d expect from a Mercedes. It’s guaranteed to sound amazing too!
