The incredible moment dad-of-three welder finds out he's won a £45k Audi and £20k in cash

Mar 2018

Ken Harper won the Audi RS3 and £20,000 in cash playing the BOBT dream car competition.

This was the moment a welder realised he had won a dream £45,000 Audi and £20,000 in cash.

Ken Harper, from Grimsby won an Audi RS3 Saloon plus the stash of cash playing the BOTB (Best Of The Best) dream car competition.

The coded welder from Stall-Mech Engineering Services Ltd, in Stallingborough got the surprise of his life when BOTB presenter, Christian Williams arrived at his workplace today with the vehicle and prize money.

Kept completely in the dark about his win by his wife Denise, she decided to involve his workplace to really break the news.

"The wife knew all about it - how she kept it a secret I will never know!" laughed Ken.

"She never said anything, everybody else knew but me!

"I still can't get over it, it doesn't seem real, it's very strange. I was just surprised, as I've been doing it now and again and thought I'd give it a go."

For this particular prize draw the father of three boys says he only purchased a couple of tickets, at just £2 each. And had also entered a competition to win a Mini for his wife but unfortunately for her, the extra gamble didn't pay off.

He currently drives an Audi and has had two of the German cars prior so is certainly used to how they handle - although this particular model rocks a 400 horse powered engine. He did tell the camera crew that he had been thinking about getting a four door following a family outing to see a show where his father had to lay along the back seats due to having bad legs.

Still in a state of shock when he spoke to the Grimsby Telegraph, Ken, 57, said: "They are good cars so I thought I would just go for it.

"I still can't believe it, it's a weird feeling as I have never won anything before, I thought it was a dream, it didn’t feel right.

"I had a near miss with last week and won £10 so I added £9 back in to the account."

He said his workmates were just as gobsmacked as him and couldn't believe he had won, for he had been trying to convince them to play too.

Ken admitted he hadn't had a chance to speak to Denise today due to putting in a full day at work, and they would probably discuss what to spend the money on over tea tonight.

"I haven't really thought about it, I'm still getting over it," he added.

But whatever he decides to do with the car and the cash, Ken and his wife have plenty of other happy things to look forward to, including the wedding of one of his three sons, later this year.

BOTB began in 1999, giving people a chance to win the car of their dreams for a small amount of money. Since it began there have been more than 400 winners of dream cars and the company uses former professional footballers such as England international Sol Campbell to judge the competition independently each week, alongside current and former referees. The last lucky winner from North East Lincolnshire was in June 2013, when a Darren Ross won a Mercedes C350 AMG Sport in the Supercar competition.
