A MERSEYSIDE factory worker was treated to an early Christmas present after winning a brand-new Golf GTI worth £26,000 – along with a surprise £10,000 hidden in the boot. Paint production operative Chris Hughes, of Crosby, was about to go out for his lunch when he was presented with the car parked up in the driveway of his workplace. Still wearing his paint-splattered overalls, the 53-year-old was led to his new car as the winner of a competition that cost him only £3.50 to enter. The dad-of-one, who has worked at Becker Industrial Coatings, in Speke, for the past 10 years, said: “I am genuinely speechless.” He then joked to his colleagues, who gathered around to check out his new car: “So this is what Lewis Hamilton feels like.” To celebrate his win, Chris will get together with grown-up children and wife Cath tonight and decide how to spend the money. He added: “I’ve no idea how I am going to spend the money yet. It’s just sinking in. It’s really great that it’s come just before Christmas though.” Luckily for Chris, his new Volkswagen arrived just as he was about to trade in his 10-yearold banger for a new car. Chris added: “I like cars but this one is really flash. I might think about selling it. Either way, it’s the best £3.50 I have ever spent. “I know it’s a cliché but it really is an early Christmas present.” Chris won his new Golf and the cash through entering car competition, Best of the Best.
